Robbin and I spent a week in August, 1998 exploring the Sierra Nevada. Executive summary: The Sierra are beautiful. It can be hot in August, even at altitude. The big mountains are in the south. The first 20 miles of the trip from US 395 to Sonora is gnarly. A room on the 34th floor of the Silver Legacy in Reno beats a hot, dusty campground. Yosemite is unforgettable. There's too many Los Angelenos in Mammoth Lakes. Before sister Lynn started liking Star Trek, she liked another show. A lot. This billboard spotted on US 395 near Carson City, NV.
An actual professional camper donning special footgear.
If it's beautiful, it must be Yosemite.
Robbin and I hiked to the top of Eureka Peak, near Graeagle, California.
Yosemite's Half Dome. Should've walked closer.
Manzanita Lake in Mt. Lassen National Park. That's Lassen on the right.
Under the slush, allegedly, is Lassen Park's Lake Helen. Two hours before taking this shot it was 104 degrees in Chester, California.
The view from Eureka Peak.
Yosemite Falls
The Incomparable Valley
Looking west towards El Capitan.
And it really looks this great!
